Motta says that the STF is in the ‘role of investigating’ and that the Chamber monitors ‘exaggerations’
The president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), stated that the Federal Supreme Court (STF) exercised “its role of investigating” and that it will monitor to avoid “exaggerations” by the Judiciary when commenting on the Federal Police operation against parliamentarians Sóstenes Cavalcante (PL-RJ) and Carlos Jordy (PL-RJ) launched this Friday, 19th.
“I don’t pre-judge anything in advance, I think the Supreme Court has the role of investigating,” he said at a breakfast with journalists. “I want to say that the Chamber has no commitment to protecting what is not correct.”
But Motta soon made a counterpoint. He said that, as president of the Chamber, he will need to deal with a line to be able to frame what is an investigation into suspicion of a parliamentarian and what could be an exaggeration.
Motta says that the relationship with the government has had ups and downs and hopes to overcome differences

“What we have to deal with, and then there has to be a line so that we can frame the investigation, if there is suspicion of a parliamentarian who did not act correctly, and what is exaggeration”, he stated. “We respect the role of the Supreme Court, we have no commitment to those who do not work correctly and we will always monitor here in the Presidency of the Chamber so that exaggerations are not committed.”
This Friday, the PF carried out a search and seizure operation to investigate suspected deviations from Jordy and Sóstenes’ parliamentary quota. The addresses of the two parliamentarians were searched and seized in the Federal District and Rio de Janeiro. The operation was authorized by STF minister Flávio Dino.
The investigation seized R$430,000 from the house of Sóstenes, who is leader of the PL in the Chamber, and highlighted atypical financial movements that reached around R$18 million from his and Jordy’s advisors.
