Procedure does not guarantee an end to Bolsonaro’s hiccups, says doctor

The medical team treating former president Jair Bolsonaro reported this Saturday, the 27th, that the procedure carried out on the afternoon of this Saturday, the 27th, seeks to resolve his recurring bouts of hiccups, but that there is no guarantee of its effectiveness. The former president was hospitalized on Wednesday, 24, to undergo surgery for an inguinal hernia.

At a press conference at the DF Star Hospital, in Brasília, doctor Cláudio Birolini explained that Bolsonaro evolved well after the surgery, but the team decided to carry out the new procedure after the former president had a prolonged bout of hiccups. The medical intervention lasted between 40 minutes and 1 hour, according to doctors.

Previously, medication against hiccups had to be doubled. “Yesterday he had a prolonged bout of hiccups, which bothered him deeply, and today he woke up exhausted,” said doctor Brasil Caiado.

This Saturday, doctors performed an anesthetic block of Bolsonaro’s right phrenic nerve. If effective, the procedure must be repeated next Monday, 29th, on the opposite side. The former president is still expected to be medically discharged on December 31st.

Doctor Matheus Saldanha stated that the procedure is effective for up to three months, but does not represent surgery. The medical team is studying alternatives to resolve the former president’s hiccups.
