“If you’re driving well, you don’t need a test”, says Renan Filho about changing his driver’s license

“If you’re driving well, you don’t need a test”, says Renan Filho about changing his driver’s license

The Minister of Transport, Renan Filho (MDB), spoke this Friday (9) about the expansion of the limit of infraction points, implemented by the Bolsonaro government, which determines when a driver loses his National Driving License (CNH).

“A good driver goes against this policy. She said that committing more infractions is not so bad for the State”, he said. “If you say ‘you might be a bigger offender than you were before,’ you’re obviously putting people at greater risk.”

Renan stated that the government does not intend to politicize the issue or change the measure, highlighting that the new CNH rule, which benefits drivers without points on their license with automatic and free renewal, goes in the opposite direction and could solve the problem. “We are not going to change or politicize the issue. We are going to encourage good drivers,” he said.

The CNH point limit was increased in 2021 by Law 14,071, which replaced the single ceiling of 20 points with a progressive system, which varies according to the severity of infractions committed over a period of 12 months.

With the current rule, the maximum limit is 40 points for drivers who have not committed any serious infraction in the last year. For those who committed a very serious infraction, the ceiling drops to 30 points, and for those who accumulated two or more, the limit is 20 points in the period.

Free renewal

The free renewal, announced this Friday, will serve as a reward for drivers who maintain a clean traffic record.

In an interview with g1Renan stated that “those who do not commit infractions do not need the State to provide work”. “If you’re driving well, it’s a sign that you don’t need a new test,” he said.

Until then, renewing a driver’s license required payment of fees that vary by state, in addition to medical and, in some cases, psychological examinations.

In São Paulo, the entire renewal process can cost around R$400. Furthermore, driving with an expired license is a very serious offense, subject to a fine of R$293.47 and 7 points on the driver’s license.
