“UN Charter is being torn up”, says Lula when criticizing Trump’s plan

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Friday that multilateralism is being thrown away and pointed to the initiative of United States President Donald Trump to create what Lula called a “new UN”, to be led by the North American.

At a meeting of the Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST), Lula recognized the vast military superiority of the USA and the precariousness of the Brazilian Armed Forces, but countered, saying that the country has no weapons but has dignity and will not “lower its head” to anyone.

“You are realizing that we are living in a very critical moment in world politics,” Lula told the audience of supporters.

“The UN charter is being torn up,” he said. “And instead of us correcting the UN – which we have been demanding since I was president in 2003, reform of the UN, with the entry of new countries -… what is happening? President Trump is making a proposal to create a new UN in which he, alone, is the owner of the UN.”

Lula reported that he spent the week talking to several heads of state in an attempt to rescue multilateralism and prevent “the law of the strongest” from prevailing. Among the interlocutors he mentioned are Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

“Multilateralism is being thrown away by unilateralism,” said Lula at this Friday’s event.
