Lula criticizes US intervention and says that force does not solve problems
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Wednesday (28), that the “use of force” is not capable of facing the ills of Latin America and defended the replacement of “military intervention” with “diplomacy”. The statement was made during the inaugural session of the Latin American International Economic Forum, held in Panama. In a speech, Lula also stated that the United States “already knew how” to act as partners with countries in the region.
Previously, the PT member had criticized on several occasions the US military action in Venezuelan territory that captured, on January 3, the president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and his wife, Cília Flores.

“History shows that the use of force will never pave the way to overcome the ills that afflict this hemisphere, which belongs to all of us,” stated the president. “The division of the world into zones of influence and neocolonial attacks for strategic resources constitutes anachronistic gestures and historical setbacks.”
Opportunity with security!
In this sense, the PT member stated that “freedom against fear” involves disarmament, by limiting the use of force and aggression between nations. According to him, the region needs leaders committed to institutional mechanisms capable of articulating, in a balanced way, different national interests. For the president, this is an essential condition for maintaining Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace and cooperation, governed by international law, which will depend on sovereign insertion on the global stage.
“Among so many doctrines that have marked history, there were also moments when the United States knew how to be a partner in favor of our development interests”, he continued. “President Lula defends a good neighbor policy, which aims to replace military intervention with diplomacy.”
The president also said that no country in Latin America will be able to solve its problems in isolation and defended a change in this behavior, with the construction of an economic bloc capable of eradicating hunger. According to the president, overcoming regional challenges depends on the joint political will of countries such as Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Panama, Venezuela and Honduras.
