Ramagem’s extradition request has been in the US since last year, says MJSP to the STF

The Ministry of Justice and Public Security (MJSP) informed the Federal Supreme Court (STF) this Wednesday, 28th, that the extradition request of former federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) had already been delivered to the United States government on December 30th of last year. There is no deadline for analyzing the application. The information is from Brazil Agency.

Former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency (Abin), Ramagem was sentenced to 16 years, 1 month and 15 days in prison for participating in the coup attempt to reverse the results of the 2022 elections. After his conviction, he left the country and fled to the United States in September.

In November, Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the STF, ordered the former deputy’s preventive detention. The following month, he ordered the Judicial Secretariat of the STF to send the documents necessary to formalize the extradition request to the MJSP. A week later, the ministry informed the Court that it had requested the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to forward the process to the North American authorities, which according to the MJSP, was delivered on December 30th.

Ramagem’s mandate was revoked on December 18, the same day that the Chamber of Deputies also declared the loss of the mandate of Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), son of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). On social media, Ramagem stated that the decision was the result of a “stroke” and accused the president of the House, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), of acting as a “subordinate of a dictator minister”, in reference to Moraes.

Motta stated that the decision was taken by party leaders to avoid a “new episode of conflict and institutional stress”.
