PP prioritizes overturning Lula's veto in Congress even though it maintains space on the Esplanada

Progressistas defined as one of the first agendas for the return of work in the National Congress the mobilization to overturn President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s veto on a land regularization project in the border strip, an issue that should mobilize the party’s bench that still has members in strategic positions in the federal government.

The position was reaffirmed by Senator Tereza Cristina, who classified the government’s decision as unfair and harmful to thousands of small rural producers across the country, arguing that the veto ignores an agreement built in Parliament with a large majority.

Opportunity with security!

— This is an irrational measure, which creates insecurity and hinders the development of the countryside — said the parliamentarian. — We have already won this fight in the Legislature by approving the proposal, and we will win again by overturning the veto. We will not give up on defending legal security and the rights of those who make a living from working in the field.

According to the senator, land regularization in the border strip is treated by the bench as essential to guarantee prosperity, access to credit and stability for rural producers, with strong appeal in several electoral bases in agribusiness and the interior.

The PP’s announcement comes amid a political scenario of greater distance between the party and the Lula government, even with the party still maintaining leading positions in the Executive.

In September 2025, the federation formed by Progressistas and União Brasil officially left the allied base in the National Congress. The internal determination, published in a note by the presidents of the two parties, senators Ciro Nogueira (PP-PI) and Antônio Rueda (União Brasil), required all members with mandates to resign from the positions they occupy in the federal Executive, including ministries, within a period defined by the leaders.

The orientation was justified by the leaders as a gesture of political coherence in the face of disagreements with the government’s conduct, at a time when the federation seeks to programmatically distance itself from the Workers’ Party and reposition itself on the political spectrum to the right.

However, the execution of this disembarkation has been partial. Despite the formal announcement, the PP still has the licensed federal deputy and Minister of Sports, André Fufuca, at the top level of the government. Fufuca decided to remain at Esplanada even after the party’s guidance, which led the party to remove him from executive roles within the party, such as the national vice-presidency and command of the Maranhão directory, but he did not leave the party nor hand over his ministerial portfolio.

In addition to the minister, the party has other members in bodies linked to the government. As GLOBO revealed, five months ago, there were 140 supporters of the PP-União Brasil federation in strategic positions.
