Lula congratulates António Seguro for his significant victory at the polls in Portugal

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva congratulated the elected president of Portugal, António José Seguro, on the night of this Sunday 8th, for the “significant victory at the polls this Sunday”. The Portuguese center-left candidate had 66% of the votes with 96% of the ballots counted, defeating the far-right populist André Ventura.

“In an election that took place peacefully and represents the victory of democracy at such an important moment for Europe and the world. And it consolidates Portugal’s position in support of the Mercosur-European Union agreement”, wrote Lula in a post on X.

The president also said that Brazil will continue to work in partnership with the elected Portuguese president and Prime Minister Luís Montenegro “to strengthen historic bilateral relations between our countries, in defense of multilateralism and sustainable development”.
