Interview: Zema criticizes 'political idolatry' and tries to differentiate itself from Bolsonarism

The former governor of Minas Gerais and pre-candidate for the Presidency, Romeu Zema (Novo), stated on Monday (6) that he did not receive an invitation to be vice-president on Flávio Bolsonaro’s (PL) ticket for the elections this year, and that he will take his candidacy to Palácio do Planalto until the end of the dispute.

“I respect the other right-wing pre-candidates, but I will take my candidacy to the end. This idea of composing another ticket is something that is more in the newspapers than in real life. I have not received any invitation, nor am I interested”, highlights Zema in a note.

Despite the denial, Zema stated that the right-wing candidates have the “common objective of defeating Lula and removing the PT from power”. “We will be together in the second round, but until then I will follow my own path”, he concludes.

The Novo presidential candidate had previously ruled out forming another electoral ticket. On March 25, Zema stated that he was “very honored to be remembered” by political leaders from other parties, but he has different proposals from the other candidates.

“I want to actively participate in the first and second rounds,” said Zema at the time. “We’ll see who will be in the second round, but whoever is against the PT, I will be giving my full support, as I did in 2022”, he reaffirmed.

According to the latest AtlasIntel survey, released on March 25, Romeu Zema has 3.1% of voting intentions in a possible first round, far from President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who has 45.9%, and Flávio who has 40.1%.
