Lula: war in Iran is 'crazy' and Brazil is little affected by the rise in oil prices

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) stated this Sunday (19) that Brazil has felt little of the effects of conflicts in the Middle East, including the impact on the price of oil. The president referred to the war between Iran and the United States as “crazy.”

“Brazil is one of the countries least affected by the crazy war with Iran. We are not suffering the increase in oil prices as many countries are suffering, because the government took measures, and Brazil only imports 30% of its diesel oil”, he declared, in a speech at the opening of the Hannover Industrial Fair, in Germany.

Iran rejects Trump announcement on new talks: state news agency

Iran’s official news agency IRNA did not cite any specific source in saying the country had rejected Trump’s ultimatum.

The PT member stated that it was “urgent” to find a way out of fossil fuels and said that Brazil has the potential to produce the “cheapest green hydrogen in the world”.

Lula also once again defended the need to “refound” the World Trade Organization (WTO) and criticized the creation of trade barriers against Brazilian products. “It is necessary to combat false narratives regarding the sustainability of our agriculture. Creating additional barriers to access to biofuels is counterproductive, both from an environmental and energy point of view”, he said.

The president also repeated that Brazil will not play the role of “mere exporter” of rare earths and said it is necessary for technologies to help Brazil build a “safer and more sustainable world”.

War for tweet

The Brazilian president also said on the same occasion that the world cannot bow to the behavior of a head of state who thinks he can tax, punish and wage wars by tweet, in reference to the North American president, Donald Trump.

“We cannot allow the world to bow down to the behavior of a president who thinks that by email or tweet he can tax products, punish countries and wage war,” he said at the opening of the industrial fair in Hannover, Germany.

Lula stated that Brazil has open arms to discuss any economic topic with Germany because it has a head of state relationship with the German prime minister. I wanted to emphasize that he has no ideological or partisan relationship with Friedrich Merz.

“When you act as head of state, I wanted to tell Prime Minister Merz that Brazil has open arms to discuss any topic with Germany. Especially the topic of artificial intelligence, data centers, critical minerals and rare earths, there is no veto to discuss with Germany”, he added.
