According to the statement, the intention is to protect “US citizens and forces in the region.” The Defense Department also says it wants to bolster Israel’s defense and help reduce tension “through deterrence and diplomacy.”

Secretary Austin emphasized that the United States is determined to prevent Iran and Iranian-backed partners and proxies from exploiting the situation or expanding the conflict. Austin made clear that if Iran, its partners, or their proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take all necessary steps to defend our people.

Tensions escalated after deaths of Hezbollah and Hamas leaders

The deaths result from Israeli attacks carried out on Friday (27). A bombing in Lebanon was aimed at Hezbollah headquarters in Beirut, where Hassan Nasrallah, leader of the extremist group, was located. The death announcement was initially made by Israeli Army spokespersons on Friday. The group, however, confirmed the information only on Saturday (28).

Hezbollah said Nasrallah was killed after a “treacherous Zionist airstrike” and promised revenge. “The Hezbollah leadership promises to the highest, holiest and most beloved martyr in our journey full of sacrifices and martyrs to continue his jihad against the enemy, supporting Gaza and Palestine, and defending Lebanon and its people steadfastly and honorably,” it states the group in a statement.

For Netanyahu, the death of Hassan Nasrallah will allow “advancement” in the release of Israeli hostages in Gaza. “We are determined to continue striking our enemies,” declared the Israeli Prime Minister upon returning from New York, where he attended the UN General Assembly.
