After attacks, petist leaders make a cuddle to Hugo Motta

After harsh criticism of parliamentarians and even President Lula himself to the mayor, Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB), two of the main petist leaders-Minister Gleisi Hoffman and the House Government leader, José Guimarães-softened the tone and left in defense of Motta.

According to Gleisi, “the debate, the divergence, the political dispute are part of democracy. But none of this authorizes personal and disqualified attacks on social networks against the mayor, Deputy Hugo Motta, which he repudiates.”

“This is not how we will build the exits for Brazil, among which the tax justice stands out. Respect for institutions and people is essential in politics and in life,” added the minister.

Guimarães stated that “despite the retrainees faced recently by the government in the IOF vote, this cannot be used as a justification for personal attacks on the mayor, Hugo Motta.”

According to him, “what we should continue to prioritize is the dispute of ideas in the social field, engaging society in understanding the efforts that the government has been making to tax super rich and promote social and tax justice.”

The government leader also reiterated solidarity with Hugo Motta and highlighted the support of the mayor to the government’s agenda.

“We will continue to work to demonstrate the importance of tax and social justice, as well as continuing the agenda that has already made significant advances in this house, always with the support of the base leaders and President Hugo Motta himself,” said Guimarães.

The climate between the governors and the mayor soured once and for all, after the bill that suspended the government’s proposal for changes to IOF. Motta warned, late on the night of last Tuesday, that he would put the suspension in voting and, the following night, the government’s proposal was already defeated in the two legislative houses. Base leaders complained that they were not communicated from the decision.

The government resorted to the Supreme Court, which further worsened the climate with Congress. Now the tone of the petistas signal an attempt to rapproche with Motta.
