Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) stated, this Monday (4), that President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) is defining a new nomination to the Federal Supreme Court after the Senate rejected the nomination of the Union’s attorney general, Jorge Messias.

In a press conference, Alckmin regretted the Senate’s negative decision, but stated that Lula is already evaluating another name for the vacancy, at a time when the Court is experiencing high procedural demands.

“First, I want to regret the non-approval of Jorge Messias, because he is a prepared person, a jurist, with experience, with a public spirit, a life dedicated to public service. But, ultimately, that is up to the National Congress”, he highlighted. “It’s bad, because there will be one less minister, which puts a burden on us. (That’s why) I think President Lula is defining his new appointment”, he concluded.

Despite the statement, Alckmin minimized possible impacts of Messias’ rejection on the relationship between Planalto and Congress, pointing to the president’s conciliatory profile: “Lula is the man of dialogue, and it is always a good path”.

Jorge Messias suffered a historic defeat when his nomination was rejected by 42 votes against 31 in favor in the Senate. Analysts interviewed by InfoMoney They also assess that the episode represents a loss for Lula who, six months before the election, could end his term without being able to register another name in the Supreme Court.

In this scenario, if Lula fails to register any name and loses the elections in October, the nomination to the STF could leave the progressive camp and go to a right-wing leader, possibly the senator and pre-candidate for the Presidency, Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ). If the prediction comes true, the Bolsonaro family will be able to place, by the end of the term, six ministers in the Court.
