Agency dedicated to combating AIDS should end activities in 2026
The United Nations Agency that focuses on HIV/AIDS pandemic can close by the end of next year, as the UN restructures in the face of a financing crisis, according to a UN document published online.
Unaids will be “extinct” by the end of 2026, says the document published on Thursday, part of a set of UN proposals to member states, which they will have to decide. The document adds that UNAIDS’s experience should be transferred to the widest UN system the following year.
The UN is simplifying its activities as it deals with the consequences of cuts in US foreign aid under the command of President Donald Trump who have shaken humanitarian agencies.
