Agreement between Mercosur and EU should come out tomorrow, says Uruguayan chancellor
“The largest commercial and investment partnership the world has ever seen. Both regions will benefit,” he said.
The 65th Mercosur meeting is also marked by the integration of Bolivia as a member country of the bloc. The summit also marks the transition of the bloc’s temporary presidency, which is currently in the hands of Uruguay and will be transferred to Javier Milei’s Argentina.
The Argentine president will even participate in a Mercosur meeting for the first time. At the bloc’s last meeting, in July, in Paraguay, Milei sent the then Argentine chancellor, Diana Mondino, while the president participated in an extreme right-wing event in Brazil.
It will be the second time that President Lula and Milei meet at an official event. The first was at the G20, in Rio de Janeiro, 20 days ago.
The PT member arrived in Montevideo today, around 4pm and went straight to the farm of former Uruguayan president Pepe Mujica, who is a friend of Lula, on his farm in a rural area of Montevideo. Mujica is treating esophageal cancer.
The meeting will also be attended by the country’s elected president, Yamandu Orsi, from the Frente Amplio, a pupil of Mujica. The new president of Uruguay will take office in March next year.
