Alckmin confirms use of reciprocity law to accelerate negotiations with USA
Mexico City-Industry Vice President and Minister Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) confirmed on Thursday (28) that Brazil decided to evaluate the application of economic reciprocity law against the United States as a strategy to accelerate negotiations on the 50% tariff imposed by the government of Donald Trump to Brazilian exports.
“What I hope is that this helps to accelerate dialogue and negotiation,” said Alckmin, pointing out that the measure is an attempt to unlock the impasse.

President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT) authorized Itamaraty to trigger the Foreign Trade Chamber (Camex), which will have up to 30 days to submit a technical report evaluating whether US measures fall into the Brazilian Reciprocity Law. The decision was made in coordination with the Civil House, farm and other ministries.
According to interlocutors to Reutersthe United States will be formally informed this Friday (29) on the opening of the process. If Camex concludes that there is a basis for applying reciprocity, a specific working group will be created to suggest contracted, such as additional tariffs on American goods and services or measures in areas such as intellectual property.
Parallel with china
The Brazilian strategy is similar to that adopted by China in past negotiations with Trump: to use reciprocal measures as a way to bring the US back to the dialogue table.
Asked if Brazil should follow the same path, Alckmin replied that the Brazilian tradition is to seek understanding. “Brazil has always acted by promoting dialogue,” he said.
Political pressure and diplomatic impasse
The Brazilian government recognizes, however, that so far the White House has not signaled a willingness to negotiate. Sources heard by Infomoney They report that Washington has rejected requests for a meeting with Brazilian authorities, which reinforces the reading that the tariff has a political character.
The initiative to trigger the reciprocity law, compared by experts to the US section 301 – a mechanism used by Washington to justify commercial retaliation – is seen as a calculated pressure movement to increase the political and economic cost of Trump’s imposed measure.
