The acting president and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), stated this Monday (27) that the meeting between Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and Donald Trump marked a turning point in relations between Brazil and the United States.

According to the vice president, the dialogue between the two heads of state was decisive in unlocking the economic agenda and opening space for a new phase of understanding between the technical teams of the two countries.

“The political step was taken with brilliance and praise. Now it is time to establish an objective work agenda”, said Alckmin, in a press conference at the Vice-Presidency, in Brasília.

According to the minister, the next step will be to deepen discussions on tariffs, taxation and investments, topics that gained momentum after the presidential meeting.

Alckmin once again criticized the tariffs applied by the US on Brazilian products, classifying them as disproportionate.

“These tariffs of 10% plus 40% are totally inadequate. The average tariff from Brazil to the United States is just 2.7%. We need to resolve this quickly,” he said.

He highlighted that around 34% of the US$40 billion exported by Brazil to the United States last year were impacted by the surcharge, mainly affecting industrial and agribusiness sectors.

The vice president also stated that, despite there being no formal requests from Washington, there is a favorable environment for advancing trade dialogue and attracting new investments, especially in renewable energy and data centers.

“This initiative can attract foreign capital, especially given the global energy shortage, Brazil has a competitive advantage in clean sources”, he highlighted.

Closing the press conference, Alckmin classified the rapprochement between Lula and Trump as “a political gesture that repositions Brazil on the international stage”. “Now begins an important phase to deepen ties between the two largest democracies in the West”, he concluded.
