Alckmin: Suspension of the 40% surcharge may occur after conversation between Lula and Trump
The acting president and Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services, Geraldo Alckmin, stated that the suspension of the 40% tariff imposed by the United States on some Brazilian products could occur after the eventual conversation between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and American President Donald Trump, in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. This possible conversation is expected for Sunday, 26th, in Kuala Lumpur, on the sidelines of the Summit of the Southeast Asian economic bloc (Asean).
“I think it’s a hypothesis – suspending the 40% or accelerating negotiations. But I think there is room for that”, declared Alckmin, in an interview with Recordshown on the night of this Tuesday, 21st.
For the acting president, negotiations with the USA have “progressed well”. Lula asked the American president that the surcharge be suspended during negotiations between the two countries. “What President Lula asked President Trump, in the telephone conversation they had on October 6, was, while negotiating, to suspend the 40%,” reported Alckmin.
