Alckmin: there was a setback in the Mercosur-EU agreement, but Brazil will accelerate its part

The acting president and Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Geraldo Alckmin, stated this Tuesday (27), that there was a “mishap” in the processing of the agreement between Mercosur and the European Union, but that the Brazilian government will “accelerate” to overcome its part of the barriers that prevent the treaty from coming into force.

Last week, the European Parliament asked the Court of Justice of the European Union for a legal opinion on the compliance of the Mercosur-EU agreement with the bloc’s treaties, paralyzing the implementation of the pact.

“We had a mishap, which is a legal issue, but Brazil will accelerate its part. President Lula will forward the request for the internalization of the agreement in our country to the National Congress”, said Alckmin.

The acting president also said that the personal data adequacy agreement between Brazil and the European Union should increase digital trade between the country and the European bloc by almost double digits. Alckmin also pointed out that the agreement between Mercosur and the EU opens up numerous bilateral business opportunities, such as rare earths and strategic minerals.

“We are dedicated to working together: Brazil, Mercosur and the European Union. This agreement that we celebrate today is in line with this historic agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. It strengthens, streamlines and complements. The opportunities are countless: rare earths, strategic minerals. We have countless opportunities to have investments, economic complementarity and productive integration”, said the acting president.

This Tuesday, Alckmin recognized the reciprocity between Brazil and the European Union of the equivalence of high data standards for personal data and privacy protection systems.

According to the Presidency’s Secretariat for Social Communication (Secom), the decision serves as a trustworthy legal framework to guarantee the international transfer of personal data between Brazil and the EU.
