Argentine justice decides to extradite 5 Brazilians convicted on January 8

The Argentine Court decided to approve the extradition of five Brazilians convicted of the coup acts of January 8, 2023, who fled Brazil to avoid the 13 to 17 year sentences imposed by the Federal Supreme Court.

As this involves the extradition of Brazilians who requested political refuge, the decision will need to be approved by President Javier Miler.

According to information from the UOLthe five cases were judged individually by judge Daniel Rafecas, of the 3rd Federal Court, in Buenos Aires. The reasons for the decision will still be announced on December 9th, when pre-trial detainees will be able to appeal to the Argentine Supreme Court.

The group is part of the 61 Brazilians convicted of coup acts who were on the run in Argentina. At the end of last year, the Argentine court ordered everyone’s preventive detention, following a request from the Brazilian government.
