Asking for pacification, Nunes takes office for 2nd term in São Paulo
Mayor Ricardo Nunes (MDB) and vice-mayor Mello Araújo (PL) took office this Wednesday (1st) for a new term at the head of São Paulo City Hall.
The ceremony took place at the City Council, presided over by councilor Eliseu Gabriel (PSB), and also marked the inauguration of the 55 councilors elected in October, who will serve until December 31, 2028.
In his first speech after taking office, Nunes highlighted the difficulty of the election he won, mentioning his opponents, Pablo Marçal (PRTB) and Guilherme Boulos (PSOL). The mayor emphasized the importance of pacifying ideological disputes and promoting collaboration among citizens. “Where work reigns, discord does not reign. Where collaboration reigns, division does not reign,” he stated.
Nunes, who took office as mayor in 2021 after the death of Bruno Covas (PSDB), said that he reaches this second term with more political experience. He stated that, throughout his administration, he became familiar with the city and its needs. “I come to this second term more prepared, knowing more about every corner of the city than I did four years ago,” he said.
The mayor also took stock of his first term, stating that his commitment is not to “pharaonic works”, but rather to caring for people. “We always want to innovate, presenting public policies that improve people’s lives”, declared Nunes, who also announced the structure of her government, which will have 22 secretariats and four management and control bodies.
During the ceremony, there were moments of tension, with boos for former president Jair Bolsonaro and shouts of “no amnesty” after councilor Zoe Martinez (PL) gave a speech in support of the former president.
