BB sees a risk scenario and triggers AGU against fake news of “experts” in magnitsky
Banco do Brasil reported to the Union Attorney General a series of posts made last week on social networks with false information about the bank and inciting massive withdrawals of resources by account holders.
According to a letter sent by the bank, the attacks on social networks began last Tuesday, 19. Among them, there is a video made by Eduardo Bolsonaro on the 20th, in which the federal deputy says that “Banco do Brasil will be cut from international relations, which will lead him to bankruptcy.” Eduardo has over 1.7 million followers on his YouTube channel.
Why is Banco do Brasil at greater risk of being affected by magnitsky law?
STF Minister Flávio Dino’s decision put banks on alert – especially Banco do Brasil
Estadão/Broadcast sought the deputy, but has not yet received an answer.
Bank President Tarciana Medeiros publicly complained about this movement at an event on the 20th, without mentioning names.
The BB denounced other authors, such as federal deputy Gustavo Gayer (PL-GO) and lawyer JEFFREY CHIQUINI, who defends former government presidential advisor Jair Bolson Filipe Martins, with posts, according to the bank, defamatory and against national sovereignty.
In communication to AGU, lawyers warn that these attacks can configure crimes against the Democratic Rule of Law, against national sovereignty, against the national financial system, as well as representing bank confidentiality and defamation. Therefore, BB wants the AGU to evaluate the action in court to curb the spread of this type of information.
The posts mentioned were made on X, Instagram and Threads, as well as videos on YouTube.
“The new strategy is to coerce, threaten and place financial institutions in the National Financial System, notably Banco do Brasil, against the Supreme Court,” says BB, in the same letter.
The information that BB had communicated to AGU about the posts was revealed by Folha de S.Paulo and confirmed by Estadão/Broadcast.
From day to night, experts appear in magnitsky law
In the document, BB reports to AGU that the campaign can lead to a bank race against the institution, due to false and incorrect understanding of the application of magnitsky law and the consequences for the bank.
Last week, BB canceled the international card of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, Mastercard Bandeira, as a result of the application of the restrictive measure decreed by Donald Trump. In place, he received a card with Da Elo, Brazilian flag whose shareholders are BB himself, besides Caixa and Bradesco.
“The risk scenario is that, overnight, and increasingly, experts in magnitsky law, graduated from social networks that recommend the withdrawal of resources from Brazilian banks, especially from Banco do Brasil, controlled by the Brazilian State,” says BB. “This skewed reasoning, which can foster a client race to withdraw funds from Brazilian financial institutions, without any knowledge, generates tension in their clients and risk to the national economy.”
The bank reported that, due to the campaign, customers began to ask “clarification for the fear of falsely propagated secondary sanctions.”
