Bolsonaro’s children participate in a vigil in Brasilia hours before the trial

Hours before the trial began that may lead to the conviction of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) for attempted coup d’état, two of the former president’s children participated in a vigil organized by supporters in front of the condominium where he meets house arrest in Brasilia on Monday night. Carlos Bolsonaro, councilman in Rio de Janeiro, and Jair Renan, councilman for Balneário Camboriú, were alongside militants in prayer and gave speeches in defense of their father.

Jair Renan said he traveled to the capital on Monday to be close to the family at the time considered decisive.

“I arrived in Brasilia today to be by my father’s side in another stage of this illegal and relentless persecution,” he said, under applause of supporters.

Carlos, who since last week he has kept in Brasilia, has reinforced the discourse of injustice against the former president and thanked the mobilization of the supporters.

The vigil gathered about 20 supporters, who concentrated in front of the Jardim Botanico neighborhood condominium. With Brazilian flags, national team t-shirts and posters in defense of Bolsonaro, the group sang religious hymns and prayed for the former president’s acquittal.

On medical and legal recommendation, Bolsonaro does not go to the Supreme Court to watch the trial. The former president continues to feature episodes of hiccups resulting from the 2018 stab.

This Tuesday, Carlos and Jair Renan are expected to watch the trial with their father, as are former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. Senator Flávio Bolsonaro participates in a session in Congress, while Federal Deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro is in the United States.
