Bolsonaro's defense calls a penalty “excessive” and promises to appeal in Brazil and outside

Jair Bolsonaro’s defense said he was convicted of the former president in the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for five crimes related to an attempted coup atmosphere “with respect”, but also with “deep disagreement and indignation”.

The former president’s defense team reiterated the position defended before the court that he did not attack the democratic state or participated in any plan, and did not participate in the acts of 8 January 2023.

“The defense understands that the penalties set are absurdly excessive and disproportionate and, after analyzing the terms of the judgment, will file the appropriate appeals, including the international level,” says a note signed by defense lawyers Celso Vilardi and Paulo Amador da Cunha Bueno.

Bolsonaro was sentenced on Thursday for five crimes related to an attempted coup of state after his defeat in the 2022 election and the sentenced to a 27-year and 3-month prison sentence in an initially closed regime.
