Brazil again demands visa for US tourist, Canada and Australia from this 5th
From this Thursday (10), citizens of the United States, Canada and Australia will again need a visa to enter Brazil. The measure, determined by presidential decree, resumes the traditional policy of diplomatic reciprocity and ends the unilateral exemption that has been in force since 2019.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MRE), the visa requirement is a response to the absence of equivalent treatment by these countries, which continue to charge the document of Brazilian tourists.

“Brazil does not grant a unilateral exemption of visit visas. We continue to negotiate exemption agreements based on reciprocity, as with the European Union,” Itamaraty said in a statement.

The decision marks the end of a policy implemented by former President Jair Bolsonaro, who had dismissed the visa requirement without a diplomatic counterpart. In a recent interview, Tourism Minister Celso Sabino stressed that they are still in progress with the three countries to enable mutual exemption.
Although the visa requirement has been resumed, the request process for foreigners will be simplified. The issuance of the visa will be carried out totally digitally, without the need for face -to -face interviews or proof of income. The cost will be R $ 479, valid for up to 90 days per visit.

According to Embratur, the United States were the second largest tourist issuer to Brazil in 2024, with 728,537 visitors – the largest number since the beginning of the historical series in 1990, behind only Argentina. Canada sent 96,540 tourists, the largest number in almost 30 years, while Australia recorded 52,888 visitors last year.
Even with the end of the exemption, the government’s assessment is that the moment for the resumption of visa requirement is politically favorable.
