Brazil leads negotiation at the UN for the creation of the state of Palestine

“A clear objective guides our working group: identifying concrete actions that states can adopt to comply with and promote the compliance with the United Nations’s international law and relevant resolutions in order to facilitate and accelerate the peaceful solution of the Palestinian issue and the implementation of the two -state solution,” explained Ambassador Sérgio Danese, Brazil’s representative in the UN.

“We firmly believe that international law is not only a set of principles to be respected: it is also a script for justice and peace and must be applied,” he said.

According to him, International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Law, together with the United Nations Charter and the relevant UN resolutions, constitute the “legal basis for a fair, peaceful, sustainable and lasting solution to the Israeli-Pastine conflict.”

“International law should serve as a shield to protect civilians and humanitarian workers, while guiding us to carry out the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and the vision of two states living side by side in peace and security within the internationally recognized borders of 1967,” said the ambassador.

Speaking to other governments, Danese asked the countries to be “actively involved in discussions.” “We also encourage the participation of representatives of the entire United Nations system – including funds, programs, specialized agencies and regional commissions – as well as Bretton Woods institutions. Their perspectives and contributions are essential for a holistic and coordinated approach,” he said.

Brazil, which divides work with Senegal, has sent questions to governments so that it can guide the work.
