Teenager drowned after jumping from bridge

Heitor Silva went to Porto on May 30 for a study visit with the school class. He lived in Vila Nova de Gaia, a neighboring city.

The young man and two other room colleagues challenged to jump from the lower floor of the Luís 1st bridge, which crosses the Douro River. The structure is 9.4 meters high.

Brazilian was the last to jump and apparently “could not swim.” The report was made to the local station SIC Notícias by a couple of German tourists who crossed the bridge and witnessed the scene.

While the first two headed on the bank of the river, Hector struggled in the water. Also according to the witnesses, one of the colleagues tried to save the Brazilian, but was overcome by the current and rescued by a boat.
