Senator calls for impeachment of Moraes: “Either the Senate stands up or there is no reason to exist”

A commission formed by Brazilian senators, pays with funds from the National Congress, will travel to the United States to visit fugitives from the court for participating in the scammer acts of 8 January. The trip was approved by the Senate Human Rights Commission, after a request submitted by Senator Eduardo Girão (Novo-CE)

The request cites four women, and three have already been convicted by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) for participation in the acts and another is defendant and is responsible for five crimes committed during the acts. After running away from the country and trying to enter the United States, they were detained by the US Administration.

Cristiane da Silva, resident of Balneário Camboriú, sentenced to one year in prison for criminal association and incitement to the crime, however, has already been deported to Brazil. The other three have been trapped in El Passo, Texas since January 21, the day after Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Will be visited, according to the application:

– Rosana Maciel Gomes, who is from Goiânia, and was sentenced 14 years in prison for five crimes

– Raquel Souza Lopes, from Joinville (SC), who was sentenced to 17 years in prison for five crimes

– Michely Paiva Alves, from Limeira (SP), who is defendant, also accused by five crimes related to January 8

In the approved request, Girão argues that it is necessary to ascertain the prison conditions and possible violations of human rights in relation to Brazilians in El Passo.

“These women have been trapped for 4 months in an American prison awaiting the American court decision about their political asylum requests,” says Girão, who stresses that the fugitives left Brazil seeking protection against what he calls “political persecution.”

“There is no indication that they invaded public buildings or participated in depredation acts, only entered a building to protect themselves from bombs that were handled by helicopters,” he argues.

Girão also states that the mission reinforces the Senate’s commitment to the defense of human rights. “Therefore, it is essential that the Senate Human Rights Commission will urgently take a diligence in order to verify the conditions of these prey and investigate allegations of abuses and human rights violations. The visit will provide a direct assessment of the situation and help to promote the responsibility of all involved in these arbitrary acts.”
