Fotilha states that he intends to transport aid to the Palestinian territory which, according to the UN, suffers from extreme hunger. However, Israel imposes a naval blockade around the territory, where its army has been waging a war against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas for almost two years, which began after the attack on October 7, 2023.
The extremist group’s attack on October 7, 2023 caused the deaths of 1,219 people in Israel. The majority of victims are civilians, according to an AFP report based on official sources.
The Israeli offensive in reprisal killed at least 66,225 people in the Gaza Strip, most of them civilians. The data comes from the territory’s Ministry of Health, governed by Hamas, which the UN considers reliable.
