Carlos Bolsonaro says doctors assess the need for new procedures
Former Rio de Janeiro councilor Carlos Bolsonaro published a photo of his father, Jair Bolsonaro, in the hospital this Thursday afternoon. According to him, doctors are evaluating the next steps in the former president’s treatment.
— Doctors continue to monitor the post-operative condition, including evaluating the need for a new procedure due to persistent hiccups — stated Carlos in the publication.
In his profile, Carlos also complained about the security scheme involving his father’s operation. Jair Bolsonaro has been serving his sentence at the Federal Police Superintendency since November 22 after being sentenced to 27 years and three months in prison for the coup plot.
Bolsonaro’s surgery is successfully completed after 3 hours in Brasília, doctors say
Elective procedure corrected bilateral inguinal hernia at DF Star hospital, under general anesthesia, and was uneventful, according to the medical team
— The number of police officers mobilized to monitor the procedure and all the movement exceeds any limit that any human being would consider reasonable — it is something absolutely unbelievable and embarrassing — he said.
Medical bulletin
Former president Jair Bolsonaro’s medical team gave details, this Thursday afternoon, about his health status after the surgery carried out at the DF Star hospital, in Brasília. The procedure was uneventful and lasted approximately three and a half hours.
Surgeon Cláudio Birolini said that Bolsonaro is already awake and in his room. According to him, the forecast is five to seven days of recovery. The doctor also stated that he will still evaluate whether to indicate Bolsonaro’s departure from the Federal Police, where he is being held.
Cardiologist Brasil Ramos Caiado said that no procedure was performed to reduce Bolsonaro’s hiccups and that this could be done on Monday.
– We chose, as a matter of precaution, to observe over the next few days to see the need for this procedure (the hiccup) – he stated, adding that the hiccup is a recurring concern for the medical team and Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro was hospitalized on Wednesday for examinations and pre-operative preparation before surgery to correct a bilateral inguinal hernia. Hospitalization was authorized by Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), after Federal Police expertise highlighted the need for medical intervention. The medical team expects the former president to remain hospitalized for between five and seven days.
The surgery is considered elective, but was indicated to avoid worsening of the condition and possible complications. Performed under general anesthesia, the procedure aimed to reposition the abdominal contents and strengthen the muscles in the groin region, where the abdominal wall weakens.
In addition to correcting the hernia, the medical team is evaluating an anesthetic block of the phrenic nerve, a procedure that may be indicated to treat the persistent hiccups experienced by Bolsonaro in recent months. The most appropriate time for this intervention has not yet been defined.
Post-operatively, Bolsonaro will remain under continuous monitoring, with strict pain control, physiotherapy sessions for early mobilization and care aimed at preventing complications, such as deep vein thrombosis and respiratory problems.
During his hospitalization, the former president is accompanied by former first lady Michelle Bolsonaro. His sons, Flávio and Carlos, were in the hospital earlier.
