CASE MENENDEZ: New audience can define brothers’ future
However, despite the support of public opinion, the Menendez face a difficult battle. Los Angeles’s new promoter Nathan Hochman said last month that his office wanted to remove a previous motion that supported a new sentence that could guarantee the immediate release of the two brothers.
New Prosecutor wants to keep sentence. Hochman argued that Menendez should stay behind bars because they never accepted their responsibility and based their defense on a series of lies. The brothers “have not shown that they understand completely and accept all responsibility for their actions,” said Hochman. “They told 20 different lies, of which admitted only four,” he added.
Justice will decide on a new sentence. The prosecution must present today to the Judge of the Los Angeles County County, Michael Jesic, his arguments to remove the motion signed by his predecessor. This motion asked the court to change the sentence to a smaller penalty than technically would free them immediately, as they spent more than 30 years in prison.
Conviction
Judgment had great repercussion in 1993. The brothers were portrayed by the defense as victims of sexual and psychological abuse in the hands of a violent father and a negligent mother. However, the prosecution described them as cold -blooded killers, motivated by an inheritance valued at $ 14 million ($ 82.7 million in the current price).
The jury could not reach a verdict. Therefore, a second trial was summoned, in which the brothers were considered guilty and sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
