Celso Amorim on conflict in the Middle East: This war will not be a walk in the park

Ambassador Celso Amorim, special advisor to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, stated in a lecture at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) this Monday, 2, that the conflict in the Middle East “will not be a walk in the park”. According to him, the conflict that began with coordinated military action between the United States and Israel, which culminated in the death of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, will have a greater dimension than the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, which captured dictator Saddam Hussein.

“It is difficult to measure what the consequences of this attack will be, but one thing is certain, this war will not be a walk in the park. It will not be a war, I believe, like the invasion of Iraq was at one point,” said Amorim in the UFRJ lecture.

The ambassador stated that, in six decades of diplomacy, he has never witnessed a moment of global tension like today. He recalled the Missile Crisis in Cuba, at the beginning of the 1960s, when a Third World War was approaching, but said that, at that time, there were actors who talked to each other.

“When the Soviet Union placed missiles in Cuba, those were days of great distress, but it was an issue and two people who were reasonably, I don’t know if they were rational, but they were people who talked to each other and it was possible to find a solution, which was not ideal for one side or the other, but it served to calm the world,” stated Amorim.

According to Lula’s special advisor, it seems difficult to imagine that the conflict will last for a short time. In an interview with the British newspaper DailyMail This Sunday, March 1st, the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stated that the military action should last four weeks.

When talking about Khamenei’s death, Amorim highlighted that it is the first time that the United States has participated in the death of a country’s leader at the start of a conflict. According to the ambassador, geopolitics is heading towards “chaos” where there are no rules.

“What we are witnessing today is a devolution of the cosmos into chaos. From a world with rules, even if they are defective, unfair and asymmetrical, to a world absolutely without rules”, said the special advisor to the Presidency.
