Church wants the most pastor and diplomat and less bureaucratic Pope, says Vaticanist
Conclave’s first round of voting, which will elect Pope Francis’ successor, ended without consensus this afternoon. A black smoke was seen coming out by the chimney of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican, around 4 pm GMT (Brasília time). The process will be resumed tomorrow.
The conclave to elect the new Pope is chaired by 70 -year -old Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, named as a favorite to be the new pontiff, according to betting houses. It is he who will be responsible for coordinating the papal election, including meetings before voting.
Parolin is regarded as a commitment candidate between progressives and conservatives. The Italian has never been directly involved in the so -called cultural wars of the Church on topics such as abortion and homosexual rights. However, on one occasion he condemned the legalization of same -sex marriage, labeling as “a defeat for humanity.”
