City in Sahara breaks hot record in August with almost 50 ° C
“El Aiune’s meteorological station surpassed its absolute and monthly maximum temperature record on August 9, 2025, with 49.2º C, compared to the previous record of 47º C, registered in August 2016,” said a DGM report.
The phenomenon is caused by Chergui, a hot, dry wind from Sahara, which was reinforced by particular weather conditions (anticyclone and desert depression), and especially by a clear sky that widened warming during the day.
On Sunday, temperatures were between 3º C to 13 ° C above the normal of the season, and 19 Moroccan cities recorded temperatures above 40º C, according to the Moroccan institution.
In June, DGM announced that 2024 was the hottest year ever registered in Morocco, with 1.49 ° C above average compared to the 1991-2020 period, in a global climate warming context.
