Conclave Guide: Who are the cardinals, as they vote and meaning of smoke
How are the votes
Cardinals write their chosen names by hand, fold paper and take him up to the altar so that he is well visible. Paper has the phrase “Eligo in Summum Pontificem” (“I element as a pontiff”) at the top, with a blank space below. It is forbidden to vote in itself.
What smoke indicates
In the last act before being presented to the faithful, the elected Pope has a few minutes alone to reflect and prepare in the so -called “Tears Room.” It is located on the left of the largest altar of the place, under the work “Fast Judgment” of Michelangelo.
About 30 to 60 minutes after white smoke, the new Pope will be presented to the faithful with the phrase “Habemus Papam!”. Cardinal Protodiacon Dominique Mamberti will read the baptism name of the chosen and announce the name chosen by the new Pope – who will then make his first public appearance on the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica, will say a prayer and will give your first blessing.
