Congress elections: How the choice of chamber and Senate presidents works
The elections that will define the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate are scheduled for this Saturday, February 1, 2025.
The election of the Senate, which uses paper banknotes, is marked for 10am.
Senators interested in running must register their candidacies in writing until the beginning of the speeches in the Plenary. Each candidate has 15 minutes to present his proposal.

Voting is done secretly, with senators depositing their ballots in ballot boxes, and the calculation is done manually by designated senators.
To win in the first round, you need to get 41 votes, and, in case of a tie, the criterion is the age of the candidate with the most mandates.
After the election, the new Senate President also assumes immediately and calls for the election of the other positions of the table.
In the House of Representatives, the vote will take place through electronic ballot boxes, from 16h.
The process begins with the registration of applications, which can be individual or in plates, and must be done by the Board of Directors.
To win in the first round, a candidate needs to get the absolute majority, ie 257 of the 513 votes. Otherwise, a second round will be held between the two most voted, where the victory takes place by a simple majority. In case of a tie, the tiebreaker criterion is the number of legislatures already exercised by the candidate.
The president-elect immediately assumes and conducts the choice of vice-presidents and secretaries of the Board of Directors.
