Convicted in the Marielle case, Domingos Brazão received R$ 3.5 million from the TCE since the crime

The counselor of the State Court of Auditors (TCE), Domingos Brazão, unanimously sentenced this Wednesday by the 1st panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) to 76 years and three months in prison, accused of being the mastermind behind the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes, has received at least R$3.5 million gross from the court’s coffers since the crime, in March 2018. The calculations were made by Globo, based on data from the TCE transparency portal.

Brazão continued to receive subsidies (as counselors’ remuneration is known) even though he has been imprisoned since March 2024, accused of being one of the perpetrators of the crime. With this item alone, he pocketed R$41,845.98 this month. Another additional amount, which began to be paid in June 2025 (when he was already in prison), for three years accumulated in the position, is R$8,369 10.

As Domingos Brazão had not yet been convicted, the TCE continued to deposit not only the subsidy and the three-year period, but other funds. One of them is a monthly education allowance set at R$1,747.42. Brazão has a school-age daughter. According to TCE rules, education assistance is offered to dependents of civil servants and members of the court up to 24 years of age. This benefit covers daycare, primary, secondary and higher education expenses. In addition, Brazão receives health assistance in the amount of R$2,471.18 for disbursements with medical and dental plans.

When Marielle died, Brazão had been out of office with four other advisors since March 2017, a year before the crime, as a result of the Federal Police’s Quinta do Ouro operation, which investigated a bribery scheme that could have diverted up to 20% of contracts with public bodies to public authorities, especially members of TCE-RJ and Alerj. He remained out of office until 2023, when he obtained a court decision in favor of reappointment.

Loss of Public Service

In the STF’s decision, the counselor was also sentenced to loss of public service. But compliance with the decision will only happen after the publication of the ruling, which still has no date. The court has seven advisors, four of which must be chosen by Aler and three by the governor. Brazão’s vacancy is considered Alerj’s quota.

The TCE counselors also sentenced João Francisco (“Chiquinho”) Brazão, former federal deputy, brother of Domingos, to 76 years and 3 months in prison. Others sentenced were: Ronald Paulo Alves Pereira for double murder and attempted murder. Robson Calixto, known as Peixe, was also convicted of criminal organization. The fifth defendant, Rivaldo Barbosa, delegate of the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police, was convicted of obstruction of justice and passive corruption.
