Suspension of actions against branch should not extend to other cases of January 8

Federal deputy Alexandre Ramagem (PL-RJ) stated today that he will continue his parliamentary mandate remotely, from the United States, where he is. Ramagem was convicted in the coup plot trial and had his arrest ordered last Friday (21).

“I’m regular. I can continue my parliamentary work, even from a distance”, said Ramagem in a video published on his profile on X. The parliamentarian argued that he could not be arrested before authorization from the Chamber of Deputies and that when he left Brazil there was no arrest warrant against him.

“Maybe so, maybe not. As soon as I have more details about this I can bring them,” said Karoline Leavitt

Ramagem, who was head of Abin (Brazilian Intelligence Agency) during the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL), was sentenced to 16 years, one month and 15 days in prison for armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law and coup d’état.

He was seen in Miami last week, even without court authorization to leave the country. This led to the request for arrest made by STF (Supreme Federal Court) minister Alexandre de Moraes, who highlighted that there was an order preventing him and other defendants in the same case from leaving the country.

According to the Chamber, Ramagem did not leave the country on an official mission. The House reported that he presented valid medical certificates from September 9th to October 8th and from October 13th to December 12th. This means that the deputy must not exceed the number of absences allowed in the year.

In the video published on X, Ramagem refutes being called a fugitive. “I didn’t come here to hide,” he said. He also criticized minister Alexandre de Moraes, whom he called a “tyrant”.
