COP30: Roberto Rodrigues will be sent special for agriculture

Professor Emeritus of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (FGV) and former Minister of Agriculture, Roberto Rodrigues, will be sent to agriculture at the 30th Conference of the Parties (COP30) of the United Nations Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in November, Belém, Pará. The invitation to the former minister was made by the president of COP30, Ambassador André Aranha Corrêa do Lago, representing the Brazilian government.

Rodrigues will act as an interlocutor between the presidency of COP30 and the productive sector. In the invitation sent to Rodrigues by the Brazilian government, Corrêa do Lago states that special envoys will act as “resonance boxes of sectors and geographies and facilitators of the flow of information and perceptions of their respective areas”. The role of special envoy, explained the ambassador, also involves activation of strategic levers with sectors and regions and facilitating the flow of information between the presidency of COP30 and the private sector.

To the Broadcast AgroRodrigues said that he is honored with the invitation and that he will have the collaboration of the representative entities of agribusiness. “It will not be an easy task. The initial challenge is to set up a unified agenda for Agro, where all productive chains are contemplated, with the aim of showing the world how sustainable and efficient the Brazilian agricultural activity and agribusiness,” said Rodrigues. The next step, after the sector’s convergence in a unit, will be the government’s conviction about the importance of agribusiness on the climate agenda, as it is the governments that sign the multilateral agreements, Rodrigues added. “Show that we are already a relevant part of the solution of some fundamental problems of humanity, such as food safety and energy transition,” said the former minister.

Corrêa do Lago justified in the invitation to the former minister that COP30 will be a “unique opportunity” for countries to reorient global efforts to accelerate the implementation of commitments to confront the climate crisis. “COP30 cannot be a moment of paralysis and fragmentation, but of hope and possibilities through action,” said the ambassador emphasizing the intention to promote a global coalition integrating governments, private sector, civil society, science, finance, innovation and local communities in climate. “If we accept this challenge together, we can transform COP30 into a decisive moment for global climate struggle. More than a diplomatic milestone, we want this to be the starting point of a global movement, a ‘movement of movements’ that mobilizes different sectors of society to face climate emergence with urgency and determination,” said the president of COP30 in the invitation.

The first meeting of Rodrigues as special envoy and the presidency of COP30 will be on May 22, in Brasilia.
