Councilor suffers transphobic attack during session in Natal

Councilwoman Thabatta Pimenta (PSOL) was the target of transphobic attacks during a session of the City Hall on Tuesday (21), while taking a position against the granting of the title of Natalense citizen to former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL).
The case, registered in a police report, is being investigated by the Rio Grande do Norte Civil Police.
Thabatta, who is a trans woman and atypical mother, was speaking against the tribute when supporters of Bolsonaro, present in the gallery, began to make transphobic offenses.

Among the speeches recorded by the councilwoman’s advisory are phrases like “you are not a real woman” and hints that she would have “two sexes.”

Despite the severity of the offenses – transphobia is an unenforceable and imprescriptible crime in Brazil, according to the decision of the STF of August 2023 – no measure was taken by the House at the time of the incident.
The councilwoman stated that the Municipal Guard did not intervene and that the people involved were not even identified.
“The delegate who heard me asked, ‘What did the House do?’ I said, ‘Nothing.’ She replied that the offenses set a crime and that the right thing would be to have a voice of arrest. But there was no record of the names of the aggressors,” he said in an interview with UOL.
On Wednesday (22), Thabatta published images of the people involved and asked for help from the population to identify them. In plenary, he returned to denounce the institutional omission and received support from other parliamentarians.
“This security fails is not just for me, a trans woman, but for so many other representations. It could have been for religious intolerance, racism, capacitism,” he said.
