Deaths shoot in the poorest countries after Trump’s help cuts
“More than six months later, the vast majority of programs remain suspended or ended, and humanitarian actors are not yet clear about help flows, endangering life, health and the means of subsistence of poor and vulnerable populations
“The suspension of financing essential health programs, food safety and humanitarian assistance initiatives affects, according to reports, the lives and well-being of millions of people worldwide,” he said.
“The abrupt and chaotic interruption of financing disproportionally harmed people living in poverty, cutting access to essential services at a time of extreme global vulnerability. It is estimated that more than 100 people may be dying every hour due to cuts in humanitarian aid,” the text says. There was no response from the Trump administration.
In July, USAID (US Agency for International Development) officially closed its doors after President Donald Trump gradually dismantled the agency. More than 80% of all agency programs were canceled in March and in July the rest was formally absorbed by the State Department. These aid cuts can cause more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, according to an alert published by researchers in Lancet medical magazine.
In the letter, however, the complaint is that the impact is already being felt. The estimates, according to UN rapporteurs, is that until June 7, 2025, 104,382 adults and 217,808 children were victims of deaths that could have been avoided
In the document, the UN points out that financing suspensions are “disproportionately harming the poorest in the world by interrupting access to vital care and services.”
