The case generated the revolt of the local population and attracted the attention of politicians across the country.

At a press conference on Monday, federal authorities admitted that the purpose of the operation was to arrest the boy’s father. But it was Marcelo who was driving the car registered on behalf of his father. Revelation further increased the indignation of the community and activists.

The Brazilian government was also informed that the governor of Massachusetts determined that the lawyers of her office were assigned to defend the 18 -year -old. An injunction was still presented to prevent him from being deported, and was attended by the court.

At Marcelo’s school, the students abandoned classes on Monday in protest.

In a video released on Tuesday, the governor insisted that the Brazilian is an exemplary student. “He is a volleyball player, a member of the school band and has lived in the city since he was five years old,” he said.

“He was taken before his friends,” he said. “He was placed in prison without a notification and without explanation,” the governor insisted.
