Deputy leader of the government says he will invite Meta to explain changes to the Chamber

Federal deputy Alencar Santana (PT-SP), deputy leader of the government in the Chamber, said he will propose an invitation for Meta to explain the changes to the platform, as announced by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, this Tuesday (7).

According to the PT member, the request will be presented after the parliamentary recess, which lasts the entire month of January.

On the social network X (formerly Twitter), the deputy stated that Meta – controller of Facebook and Instagram – “embraced the concept of freedom of expression defended by the extreme right”.

Meta’s announcement was interpreted by experts as an attempt by Mark Zuckerberg’s company to reposition itself on the eve of the start of Donald Trump’s new government in the USA

Furthermore, Santana said that Facebook and Instagram “will relax their surveillance on the spread of conspiracy theories and hate speech.”

“We are facing a gigantic setback in terms of human rights. The announcement made by the owner of Meta raises a warning signal because this new orientation of the platforms has the potential to send a large part of humanity back to the obscurantism of the Middle Ages”, he wrote. “We will not be able to accept this passively,” he added.

Earlier, Zuckerberg said he will end Meta’s fact-checking program and replace it with user ratings. In this way, the company will delegate to Internet users the function of checking the content of posts disseminated on the network.

In the report, Meta criticized what it called “secret cuts” in Latin America and said that Europe is “institutionalizing censorship”.
