Dino suspends trial on civic-military schools in São Paulo
Minister Flávio Dino of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) suspended the trial discussing the adoption of the Civic-Military School model in São Paulo. He asked for a view last Friday, 2. The Court thought whether or not to be a decision by Minister Gilmar Mendes who released the implementation of the program.
Gilmar’s decision complied with a request from Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans). He revoked a decision of the São Paulo Court of Justice (TJ-SP) that had suspended the law that established the civic-military school model in the state. The program is one of Tarcisio’s priorities in his management.
In assessing the case, Gilmar considered that the TJ-SP invaded the STF’s competence by suspending the model because the law that instituted civic-military schools is also the subject of actions in the Supreme. Therefore, the minister understood that the lawsuit in state justice should await trial by the Supreme.

The TJ-SP had welcomed APEOESP action, the largest teachers’ union of the state network. The entity claims that issues related to this modality of education are of federal competence. Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) management, however, defends the prerogative of the state to create the program.
According to the São Paulo government, 300 schools showed interest in the adoption of the civic-military model in public consultation. The adhesion of schools to the program is voluntary. The initial forecast of implementation was for 2026, but in February the State Department of Education announced 100 schools that should adopt the model from the second half of this year.
