Earthquake in Afghanistan leaves dead and thousands of injuries
Local government believes the deaths may arrive close to a thousand people. “The number of dead and injured is high, but as the area is difficult to reach, our teams are still on site,” said Ministry of Health spokesman Sharafat Zaman.
Government confirms home collapse and buildings. Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Afghan administration, said on social networks that the earthquake caused deaths and destruction in various provinces, but did not have additional details.
Taliban regime spokesman, who controls the country, appealed for international help. Zaman said that in this time of crisis “all available resources will be used to save lives.”
USGS warns of high risks. The US geological service predicted, through its models, “significant lows” and “widespread damage in the region”, noting that most local buildings are extremely vulnerable to earthquakes.
