Enter into force of 3 days ordered by Putin in Ukraine
“The ceasefire (…) on the 80th anniversary of Greater Vitória has started,” the news agency said.
Hours before his entry into force, Moscow and Kiev exchanged a series of air attacks, which caused airport closing in Russia and left at least two dead in Ukraine.
Kremlin has indicated that Russian forces will fulfill Putin’s order, but will respond “immediately” if Ukraine launches any attack.
According to the Russian presidency, Putin made this decision “for humanitarian reasons” and after pressure from the United States to stop the Russian offensive in Ukraine, which began in February 2022.
Since his inauguration, US President Donald Trump has tried to negotiate a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev, but failed to obtain major Kremlin concessions.
Putin rejected in March a joint proposal from the United States and Ukraine to a ceasefire, and has since offered few contributions to Trump’s peace efforts.
