Moraes orders expertise on Bolsonaro's health after request for surgery

The First Panel of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) will analyze, in an extraordinary virtual session this Thursday, the decision of Minister Alexandre de Moraes who denied former president Jair Bolsonaro’s request for house arrest. The trial is scheduled to begin and end on the same day.

The trial was scheduled for this Wednesday, two days after Moraes denied yet another request from the former chief executive’s defense. In the order, the magistrate highlighted the “complete suitability” of Papudinha, where Bolsonaro is being held, for the former president’s medical needs. “Fully satisfactory conditions for serving the sentence”, he noted.

Moraes even cited the “large number of visits” from deputies, senators, governors and public figures that Bolsonaro receives as proof of the former president’s “intense political activity”, even though he is in prison. In the minister’s view, this routine corroborates certificates of the former president’s “good physical and mental health condition”.

In another part of the decision, the STF minister highlighted that the former president was entitled to 144 medical treatments, an average of three consultations per day, during the period in which he was imprisoned in Papudinha. In the same period of time, the former Chief Executive received 36 visits from third parties, went on 33 walking sessions and met his lawyers 29 times.

According to Moraes, the information shows that the custody of the former president is provided “in absolute respect for his health and human dignity”, as Bolsonaro has continuous and permanent medical care, undergoes physiotherapy sessions and physical activities, has full religious assistance, in addition to permanent visits from his wife, children, daughter and stepdaughter, in addition to “numerous visits” from lawyers and third parties.
