Senator Flávio Bolsonaro (PL-RJ) filed on Wednesday (23) a new request for impeachment against Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Court (STF). This is the 29th formal attempt to dismiss the magistrate.

In the play, Flávio accuses Moraes of crimes of responsibility, claiming that the minister has been biased and violated political freedoms by imposing precautionary measures on his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), and investigating his brother, licensed federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP).

“The Federal Senate, at this time, can not only, but should act, in the name of democracy, justice and the preservation of the impartiality of the Brazilian judiciary,” says the text signed by the senator and reproduced by Estadão.

Flávio Bolsonaro states that the restrictions imposed on the father, such as the use of an electronic anklet and the prohibition of social networks, constitute censorship. He also compares Eduardo’s performance in the United States with actions of other politicians who, according to him, were not the subject of investigation.

“After all, why the political manifestations of Eduardo Bolsonaro, albeit incisive, are considered a threat to the Brazilian State, while Dilma Rousseff’s trip to the UN Tribune to denounce an alleged institutional coup or international travels of Cristiano Zanin promoting the narrative that Lula was the victim of a corrupted judicial system did not even investigate?”, Asks the senator.

Offensive against the STF

The impeachment request will be technically analyzed by the Senate law, but its processing depends exclusively on the president of the House, Senator Davi Alcolumbre (Union-AP). To this day, none of the requests against Supreme Ministers have been taken on.

The offensive is part of the Bolsonarist strategy to press the Senate in an attempt to create an institutional counterweight to the Supreme Court. In a recent interview, Jair Bolsonaro argued to elect “at least 20 senators” in the 2026 elections to directly influence the composition of the court.

In addition to the impeachment request, the opposition articulates projects to change the impeachment law and grant amnesty to investigated by acts of January 8, 2023, measures that must return to the agenda in Congress after the parliamentary recess.
