Former Uruguayan spy wants to give official testimony about Jango’s death
Neira was appointed by the Uruguayan government to monitor the Brazilian and put listening on the farm where he was, between 1973 and 1976.
In 2015, in a statement for the documentary “Operation Condor: Inconcentera Truth”, Neira had already given information about how the former president was considered as a “threat” to the military regime.
“Jango became dangerous for the regime because he gathered people with political power of various currents,” he said. “His participation in a return plan to Brazil was seen as a threat. The military government did not consider the moment for its return,” said Neira.
In the documentary, Neira also told about conversations that he heard from Brazilian and foreign generals and military during the government of Ernesto Geisel.
The ex-agent version is also that the execution involved the exchange of drugs applied to the former president.
At that time, Neira also detailed her efforts to prevent an autopsy. “We had to occupy the permanence of Jango for at least 48 hours to prevent the autopsy from being done,” he said.
The former agent’s decision was positively received by Jango’s son. “The case João Goulart is not finalized,” said João Vicente Goulart. “It is open in the court of Rio Grande do Sul. It is not acceptable that the special commission of dead and missing politicians investigate the death of Juscelino Kubitschek and ignore that of Goulart,” he insisted. “The lack of clarification on this case is something we can no longer tolerate,” he said.
