French that escaped execution in Indonesia in 2015 is released in France
“I never thought this would happen (…), it was time, after 20 years,” Serge Atlaoui told journalists present in his release, in the Meaux-Chauconin prison, near Paris. Wearing gray pants and white t -shirt, he was greeted by his lawyer, Richard Sédillot, with a long hug.
“Today is an exceptional day for my family, my loved ones, all those who supported me,” he added, reporting that “distance and loneliness” were “the hardest things to endure” all these years. With a slightly thrilled voice and his eyes shining, he said he said “goodbye and forever” to the prison guards before leaving.
“He will breathe such an expected, so desired freedom for so many years,” his wife announced in an interview with RTL radio, adding that he did not want to reveal the place or the time he would meet again with her husband. “To think he’s back, that he will be with us again in our daily lives, it’s so amazing that I can’t even imagine,” she said deeply thrilled. “I will rediscover my husband and, conversely, he will rediscover me. Twenty years later, so let’s rebuild. Everyone will have to learn to live normally,” he confided.
This year, Indonesia was the country honored by France at the July 14 national party, at the celebrations of the fall of Bastille.
